The newly anticipated online Web App looks very sharp. Much more polished than Google Doc. The biggest advantage for the Web App is that all your documents are now stored on your 25GB SkyDrive, free if you sign up with an Windows Live ID.

We’ve covered how to map SkyDrive onto your local machine, with the 25GB cloud storage you can now use that method to seamlessly have all your documents upload to the cloud and be ready access and edited from anywhere in the world. All you need is just a browser.

Beginning to use the Office Web App is pretty straight forward. Once you log into your live account, you should see something like this below.

There are 4 types of documents you can create right from the right-hand side of the page, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

Let’s take Word for example, you will get this extremely polished looking UI almost the same as what you see in the desktop version. Though, you will only get some of the basic functions, but in my opinion those functions are enough for your daily needs.

Unlike the desktop version, the “File” button does not open a whole new backstage. Instead, you get some of the basic option on a documents.

Let’s try out the Office Web App now. You certainly don’t want to miss it if you are the kind of collaboration geek.

To download the app, simply click on the download link on the bottom left of the page. And the installation process is fairly straightforward. Within a minutes, you have the tool ready to use on your local computer.

Both web version and desktop WPF app version work the exact same way, fill up the criteria at the right panel, run the query to find the resources, and play the material on the left hand side.

You can save the query for future use, bookmark the items (or save the items locally if in offline mode), and finding the resources through the different tab on the right-hand side panel.

Well, tell you what, you don�t need either of their service nor hardware. You can achieve just the same with your current hardware. Assuming you have a modern game console, like XBOX 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii, you can use them as a media mid-ware that connects between your Home PC to your Widescreen HDTV. With some of the neat tools you can instantly make your regular Windows 7 into a home media center without any effort. (Note: I know there are many ways to setup a HTPC and Windows 7 comes with a great Windows Media Center feature, but here I would like to show you something different.)

There are two tools you can use to enable your Windows 7 as a Media Center server so you can watch Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, CBS, YouTube, CNN, ESPN and more on your TV.

1. PlayOn

PlayOn is a software program that runs on your Windows PC, giving you access to a wide range of Internet content on your TV — Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon VOD, and many others. This product, however, is not free, but you can download the trail version for 14 days.

Note that Hulu, Netflix, CBS and some other internet TV services only will be available in US. So if you aren�t living in the state you might not able to use those features, but YouTube, CNN and some other features will still work.

2. TVersity

There is a Pro Edition and a Free Edition.

The free edition of TVersity is the same TVersity Media Server that has been downloaded millions of times and has become the leading media server world-wide. It includes all the features you have come to know and love including on-the-fly transcoding. The ability to watch premium online content however has always been exclusive to the Pro edition of TVersity.

Once you have downloaded either of the software, the installation should be simply enough all you need to do is enable the folders and services you would like to share to yourgame console.

Depending on the kind game console you have, in order for those services to work you must connect both your PC and the game console on the same home network. In PlayStation and XBOX 360 you will find them in the system dashboard. In Wii, you can find the PlayOn (currently in beta) in Opera Browser.

Give them a try, and enjoy setting up your Home Media Center.

The checklist includes 6 categories but some of them are out-dated or not so irrelevant. Here is the revised version that we like.

1. Action Center

Action Center is the new feature first introduced in Windows 7. It�s a central location in Windows 7 that checks several security and maintenance-related items to help indicate your Windows 7 machine�s overall performance.

2. Microsoft Security Essentials

Not sure why the original list still has Windows Defender listed while Microsoft Security Essential has released almost over a year. It�s a complete suite that fights against Virust, Spyware, Malware, etc. It may not be everyone�s choice but believe or not if you still want an anti- type of software guiding your computer this is all you need.

3. User Account Control

UAC was one of the features in Vista that people hates the most. But no matter how people dislike it in the previous version Microsoft had no intention to completely wipe it out because they truly believe it�s a very effective way of protecting your computer from allkinds of bad intruders. Instead, they improved this feature a bit further and gave the end users more choices to adjust by their own.

It�s certainly a feature that makes your computer securer. Especially, if you think installing any of the anti- type of software is so old and out-dated, you definitely shouldn�t disable the UAC. UAC isn�t an anti- type of software but it certainly helps prevent bad things from being installed on your computer.

4. Backup and Restore

To me, it should be categorized in Security. Backup and Restore is a disaster recovery tool that is only helpful when the disaster happens, e.g. the hard drive in your windows 7 machine died. However, depending on the definition of disaster that you have, you may still consider it as one items in your security checklist because when the bad things like virus infection happened it�s the tool that you need to get all your data back.

5. Windows Update

Needless to say, whether or not you like it, disabling Windows Update is just a bad idea. A lot of times, I just don�t understand those who disabled Windows Update simply just they don�t like it. What actually is bothering you anyway?

6. Windows Firewall

Simply put, if you already have router at your network, Windows Firewall is all you need on your Windows 7 for a firewall. You actually don�t need any 3rd party firewallsoftware, at all, because the built-in firewall feature in Windows 7 has pretty much everything a normal firewall requires.

Final Words

Having all these things properly set up in your Windows 7 machine doesn�t mean you can do whatever you want to do without worrying about being attacked. You will still need to be cautious about your action doing things over the Internet. Remember, the bad guys are always a step ahead of the game.
